All the things you have seen
no man should ever see
The moments pass
but those screams never cease
the scars never heal.
A hero’s welcome for some
for you a job to be done…
You felt the gunshots
smelled the sulphur
Acrid smoke
cries of the fallen -
from their side -
from yours -
hiding in trenches
watching each footstep
deafening echoes
of bombs and sudden death
Some forging ahead
with blood in their eyes
some falling broken
upon their own swords.
You carried the abandonment
on your weary shoulders
as the world turned
a blind eye to the losses
The radios and TVs
screaming defeat
expecting you to return
from the mouth of hell
to normal life
in one piece.
We should always remember
your valor
your agony
your sacrifice
for you it was never
about the game of thrones
it was only about what was right
so may you find peace
under your blankets of stars
in sleep
and from your tortured dreams..
and release from the demons of war
and make them return
to haunt the ravaged earth
stained with the blood of men
on distant foreign shores..
Incredible tribute. Thank you.
I shook hands with a vet who is a regular customer at work today and said thank you. He came in, dressed in full uniform and somehow it just seemed right to acknowledge him for what he did … long before I was even born incidentally. Great poem.
